This initiative The Resilience in the Sahel Enhanced (RISE) which involves the implementation of two five-year USAID-funded projects, Resilience and Economic Growth in the Sahel - Enhanced Resilience (REGIS-ER) and Resilience and Economic Growth in the Sahel - Accelerated Growth (REGIS-AG), across Burkina Faso (Est, Centre Nord, Sahel regions) and Niger (Zinder, Maradi, Tillaberi regions), aiming to strengthen vulnerable households' resilience to climatic, economic, and conflict-related shocks through agricultural and market-based interventions. These initiatives operate in multiple regions of both countries, introducing climate-smart farming techniques for staple crops like cowpea, millet and sorghum to nearly 83,000 farmers, while also supporting poultry and livestock activities for over 50,000 additional producers.
An extensive economic evaluation was conducted to measure the effectiveness, financial sustainability and long-term benefits of these interventions, using detailed assessments of costs, market demand and potential risks to guide future development efforts in the region. A comprehensive cost-benefit analysis (CBA) evaluates the projects’ interventions implemented in agriculture, poultry, and small ruminant value chains (VCs). The analysis included detailed demand forecasts, cost estimates, and risk-adjusted sensitivity scenarios to ensure robust decision-making support for USAID, REGIS-ER, and REGIS-AG.
